Fiber Collage Workshop at Little House Art Studios, SC.

    Thursday, 22 October 2009 11:39 A GMT-04
    Date: Jan 9 and 16; 10:00-4:30
    Location: Little House Art Studios
    Cost: 150.00 plus supplies
contact Susan to reserve your spot at sorrell@creativechick.com
    Organized By: Susan R. Sorrell

    Event Description:
Susan Sorrell's Fabric Collage workshop is developed from the tradition of quilting and adding the creativity of art.

Taking scraps of fabric, appliqué, threads, beads and embellishments to open up a whole new world of possibilities for self-expression. Fabric collage can lend itself to be abstract, naive, complex or childlike. Designs can come from popular culture, sayings, songs, or stories.

This workshop is for all levels, and no sewing machine is required. Fabrics can be used clothing or bought from a store. Needle and thread are used like drawing tools to add details and color to a piece of fabric. Beads and embellishments make the piece glimmer and three-dimensional. There is no right or wrong way to do it, be experimental and make it as complex or easy as you wish. Think of it as a miniature quilt that has had “glamour" make over!!! The funkier...the better! You don't need any sewing skills; this is about expressing yourself with cloth!!!
All Levels, designed for the beginner

Topic:Writing an Article for Quilting Arts/Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine

Artist/Editor Pokey Bolton PATRICIA CHATHAM BOLTON (Editor-in-Chief) was introduced to embellished quilting and the related needle arts in 1998, and ever since she took her first stitch (a fly) and embroidered her first motif (a spider), she has been entangled in this hobby and doesn't envision herself free. Art quilting and mixed-media have, quite literally, taken over her life--so much so that she left her doctoral program and full-time teaching job to found Quilting Arts Magazine®, and later with her husband John, Cloth Paper Scissors® magazine. She and John live and work in Stow, Massachusetts.

    Art Update

    posted Tuesday, 8 February 2005

I have been a busy fiber artist these last couple of weeks and need to catch everyone up to speed on the American Craft Council show coming up this month. I have completed my samples for the wholesale show and wanted to post all of them for everyone. Along with the samples, I am making extras to sell at the retail show...and I have lots more to put together before I leave on the 19th. I tried to have a lot assortment to choose from, and I have some more ideas I will toy with this spring. I have been playing with color combinations too....not everyone like bright colors, so I tried to tone down the colors a tad. Also, I added the meanings to each piece, for the non-Southerns  in the reading audience. :)

"Everyone Has To Look Out Their Own Keyhole" 2004
    (meaning: mind your own business)

"He's Narrow Between The Eyes-Not to be trusted" 2004
    (meaning: trust your gut)

"Too Poor To Paint and Too Proud to White Wash" 2004
    (meaning: Southern aristocracy)

"They Are Like Two Peas In A Pod-no Difference Between 'Em" 2004
(meaning: Two people that act alike.)

"You Can't Measure A Snake Until It is Dead" 2004
    (meaning: Don't jump to conclusions)

"Love Many, Trust Few, Always Paddle Your Own Canoe" 2005
(meaning: You can love a lot of people, but only trust few people, so take care of yourself.)

"Sitten is Cheaper Than Standin, so Sit Down Before You Fall Down" 2005
(meaning: Laziness or a threat to knock someone's head off.)

"Settle The Coffee, Talk to The Table and Let's Eat" 2005
(meaning: To settle the coffee is to put egg shells in the coffee grounds and talking to the table is saying the blessing over the food.)

"Always Keep your Hook Baited and Ready to Fish" 2005
(meaning: Always be prepared for the unexpected)

    "Pretty-by-nights and Love Lies a Bleeding" 2005
(meaning: These are names of flowers found in the South.)

"God Gave Nuts To Them With No Teeth" 2005
(meaning: People not using their brains.)

"Shot Gun Shack with Knock Head Room" 2005

(meaning: A shot gun shack is a type of house built in the South with low ceilings.)

"Her Mouth Is Running Up a Ferocious Storm" 2005
(meaning: talking too much can start gossip.)

"Creaking Doors Hang The Longest" 2004
(meaning: cranky people get all the attention.)

"One Day Drinking Wine, Next Day Picking Grapes" 2004
(meaning: rolling in cash one day, poor the next)

"Mighty Small Chance of Water in His Likker" 2004
(meaning: the guy is a little crazy)
